I am huge fan of good Rioja and it is particularly exciting when I can source a mature example from a great vintage: the 1998 Condado de Ovante Rioja Reserva will not disappoint! To accompany our feature on Northern Italy, I have sourced a fantastic rich, spicy, Barolo from winemaker Massimo Marasso which perfectly demonstrates why the Nebbiolo grape is associated with some of the country’s best and most long-lived reds.

For this issue’s next wine: 2002 Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits Domaine Bertagna, I will let Sunday Express’ Joe Wadsack’s quote speak for itself: “a legend in the making”.
