South African wine producers are committed to protecting the fragile environment in which they grow their grapes, to make the wine. The Cape winelands are located within the Cape Floral Kingdom, home to over 9600 different plant species and the smallest and richest plant kingdom in the world. The South African wine industry is working to set aside land, on wine farms, to protect this biodiversity hotspot. To date there are over 60,000 hectares of land devoted to conservation; that’s an area greater than half the vineyard footprint. South Africa is leading the way in producing wines that respect the natural environment in which they are made.
