For Cono Sur, the bicycle has become a symbol that honours their employees and represents their commitment to developing a viticulture both in excellence and with respect for the environment. This range is called ‘Bicicleta’ because wherever you look at Cono Sur you’ll find bicycles propped up against the walls and at the end of rows of vines. It’s the way the workers get to work and around the estate, as well as being highly practical and good for the environment, which is integral to Cono Sur’s core belief in ‘doing things the natural way’. This range is a tribute to them.

The Bicicleta wines are characterized by their fruity expression and for offering more than the traditional strains, a clear example of this range’s innovation, style and creativity.

Cono Sur's sparkling wine comes from one of the southernmost wine growing regions in the world, the Bio-Bio valley. Known for its sunny yet cold weather conditions, along with rich red soils, it is the perfect location for well-balanced, concentrated wines, with excellent acidity and splendid minerality.

These premium wines have great elegance and each variety in this range has its own personality and unique character.

The Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir come from the Casablanca Valley, which gives them minerality due to its close proximity to the ocean. The Merlot comes from Peralillo, known for its hot days and cold nights. Our Carmenere is from the Cachapoal Valley, ideal due to its warmth. And coming from the Bío Bío Valley, Chile´s southernmost wine region, is our Riesling, which contains all the minerality and freshness of a zone with such climatic extremes.

In 1996 Cono Sur decided to take on the challenge of making its first ultra premium wine. The chosen variety was Pinot Noir and for the inaugural vintage 20 barrels of the best grown fruit was set aside to make it. Later a Sauvignon Blanc was added to the collection.

Cono Sur's Chief Winemaker Adolfo Hurtado grew up expecting he would work in agriculture like his family before him, and then at university turned his hand to wine. His favourite things about the job are 'the passion of the team' as well as the innovative approach in developing more unusual grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Riesling and Viognier. Adolfo has also experimented with growing vineyards in cool climate areas of Chile like Bio Bio and Casablanca, which he credits with bringing Cono Sur's signature fresh and elegant style.

Adolfo's favourite part of the job is that no day is normal! As chief winemaker he splits his time between the vineyards, the winery office and overseas trips to see export markets. And his favourite grape? That's Pinot Noir, which he says 'is also the hardest to grow and make wine from, so when you get a good Pinot Noir that is something to be really proud of'.
