Father Pierre Pérignon took over as cellar master at the Benedictine Abbey of Hautvillers in 1668 and vowed to make 'the best wine in the world'. He succeeded in transforming the history of wine and is known today as the Grandfather of champagne.
Epernay is in the North East of France. The difficult climatic conditions of this area, with average temperatures of 10.5° C, are the most favourable for production of grapes of exceptional quality.
