Expert Opinion

In the press...

Of the 2008 vintage, Matthew Jukes said: “Sweet wine specialist De Bortoli makes this luxurious elixir for Tesco. A marmalade and caramel brew with a minutes-long finish, it’s heaven at a fraction of the price you’d expect to pay for this quality.”

Matthew Jukes - Weekend (Daily Mail) 07/04/2012

Of the 2008 vintage, Olly Smith said: "A great price for a sweet wine of this calibre. It's lemony, mango-sweet, rich and syrupy. Serve chilled with a slice of salty Roquefort for a one-way ticket to Titillation Central."

Olly Smith - Live (The Mail on Sunday) 22/04/2012

Of the 2008 vintage, Jamie Goode said: “Fans of sweet wine should head to Tesco and snap up this well-priced little beauty. It’s viscous and sweet with grape, apricot, melon and citrus-peel tastes, and would be ideal with orange and lemon polenta cake.”

Jamie Goode - S Magazine (Sunday Express) 24/06/2012

Of the 2008 vintage, Rob Buckhaven said: "Tesco's Finest* Dessert Semillon adds peachy flavours to a cherry compote."

Rob Buckhaven - Fabulous Magazine (The Sun) 22/07/2012

Of the 2008 vintage, Hamish Anderson said: "This is a serious bargain produced by the sticky specialist De Bortoli; you can get three of these beautifully poised yet decadent halves for the price of one Noble One - its world beating Semillon. This level of sweetness and creamy texture is needed to handle the stewed fruit, while the wine's nutty undercurrent picks out the oaty crumble."

Hamish Anderson - Daily Telegraph Magazine 25/08/2012

Of the 2008 vintage, Jamie Goode said: "An affordable bottle by Australia's sweet wine specialist De Bortoli, this is very sweet but balanced with lush apricot and melon flavours and nice lemony acidity. A glass of this would be the ideal way to finish Christmas lunch."

Jamie Goode - S Magazine (Sunday Express) 16/12/2012

Of the 2008 vintage, Olly Smith said: "Luscious sweet vino like a magnificent mango. Stick a bottle in the fridge and serve it with a blue cheese for a mesmerising contrast of flavours."

Olly Smith - Live Magazine, Mail on Sunday 03/03/2013

Background

History

De Bortoli Wines is a 3rd generation family business established by Vittorio & Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. In 1952, Vittorio's son Deen, joined and energetically expanded the company, implementing many innovations and new wine styles, embracing new technology and viticultural practices. In the 80s Deen and his son Darren made a sweet white wine from botrytised Semillon called 'Noble One', now Australia’s benchmark sweet white wine. This wine is made using the same principals.

Regional info

The Riverina enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate. The sandy loam soils vary in colour from red sandy earths to brown clay loams. The De Bortoli Bilbul winery in the Riverina is the birthplace of icon dessert wine Noble One, developed by Darren De Bortoli in the 1980s which, since its release, has been awarded more than 100 Trophies and 345 Gold Medals. Climatic conditions allow the development of ‘noble rot’ to occur, providing the opportunity to make complex sweet white wines.
