Tasting Notes

An intense ruby red wine with aromas of plum and cherry.

Well-structured and smooth with a long finish.

Storage Instructions

This wine can be drunk now but will further improve if carefully stored for up to 3 years

Expert Opinion

In the press...

Decent, well made Chainti from a good vintage, with classic Sangiovese notes of tealeaf and red fruits and a savoury note lurking in the background. The tannins need food, but that's no bad thing. Score: 86/100 − £7.29 at Tesco

Background

History

Piccini's story began in 1882 with Angiolo Piccini, who owned only 7 ha of vineyards in the Chianti area. Even today, Piccini is still 100% family owned by Mario and Martina Piccini who mark the 4th generation. Piccini is one of the few wineries in Italy that has a female winemaker. In one of the most traditionally male-dominated industries Antonella has had huge success producing world-class wines and winning international acclaim.

Regional info

This Chianti Riserva was produced using Sangiovese and Merlot grapes grown on the rolling vineyards located in the famous Chianti region in Tuscany. These hills are thought to be the centre of Italian wine-making and it is here that the Sangiovese grape thrives.

A Must for Italian dishes

Not surprisingly, this wine is excellent with red meat Italian dishes and cheese, without being too heavy. Looks good on the table despite a very sensible price. Strongly recommended but leave some for me.

Enjoyable standard Chianti with food or by itself. Not afraid to serve it to anyone and generally very well received. I will stock.

We love this wine!

This fruity full bodied wine is exactly to our taste. We sip it before we eat and really enjoy it that way. The price, when it is on offer, is a real bargain. This is our very favourite wine.

CORKED

This review is for the 2009 vintage

I recently purchased a discounted case 6x 75cl of this Chianti Riserva 2009 vintage at a supposed 50 % discount of £36.00. Unfortunately 2 bottles or one third of my purchase was corked and undrinkable so instead of receiving the above described intense ruby red wine with plum and cherry aroma I did in fact receive an intense headache producing sour vinegar. Very disappointed.

Rich colour, lovely bouquet, needs to be opened well in advance of drinking. Very mild on the palate, but filling the mouth with smooth long lasting plummy deliciousness.

This is a very good, standard Chianti which is excellent both with red meat and also for casual glasses of wine. A very good price too.

Excellent wine, good value, smooth, light and easy to drink. Another excellent wine from Tesco. Pity their delivery service service is so erratic!

While a pleasant wine, it is a strictly average Chianti made reasonable only because of the discounted price
