Expert Opinion

In the press...

"Do check out Tesco's excellent own-label Finest sherries, made by the Barbadillo bodega. This is distinctly hazelnutty and nearly dry."

Susy Atkins - Stella (The Sunday Telegraph) 23/09/2012

"And don't forget amontillado Sherry. The drinks cupboard staple of many a granny back in the 1960's - albeit the anglicised medium-dry version - is still ridiculously good value. I like Tesco's seductively nutty Finest* Dry Amontillado. Delicious with cheddar."

Fiona Beckett - The Guardian Weekend 13/10/2012

Background

History

Barbadillo is a 100% Spanish family owned business based in Sanlucar de Barrameda since 1821, that effortlessly brings together tradition and modernity. Barbadillo owns 500 hectares of vineyards spread over two estates, Gibalbín and Santa Lucía, both of which are located in the area known as Jerez Superior. The former has an extensive winemaking plant fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology and Barbadillo’s numerous wine cellars are strategically distributed over the outstanding area of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, surrounding the medieval castle of Santiago.

Regional info

The Jerez Superior are the celebrated lands of albariza, a porous, chalky soil characterised by its pale colour that is particularly well suited to the cultivation of vines grown for the production of quality wines. The climate is mild with more than 3,000 hours of sun softened by the cooling influence of the Atlantic. These factors, together with a long winemaking tradition, allow for excellent ripening of the Palomino grapes and ensure a high degree of beaumé (level of sweetness) and moderate acidity.

Quality and taste

I purchased in store for Christmas. Very dissappointing, appearance was rather cloudly, perhaps I should have returned it, taste was sharp, harsh, nutty - I failed to pick up any orange or spice flavours. So caution, not recommended.

Poor sherry

The sherry was poor compared to Tesco's 1 litre Amontillado, which I normally buy but was out of stock. I love Tesco's 1 liter Amontillado sherry and the Wine Society's Amontillado, but this was akin to a cross between Dry and Amontillado.
