Deeply dark, with hints of tiled red.
Aromas of small red and black fruits and spice.
The mouth is very well balanced with dark fruit and liquorice flavours and velvety tannins.

This wine can be drunk now but will further improve if carefully stored for up to 3 years
Anthony Rose - The Independent Magazine 09/06/2012Of the 2000 vintage, Anthony Rose said: "This south-western blend of mainly Malbec and Merlot shows the benefits of ageing in the bottle with cherry richness, French oak, mellow tannins and a savoury sprightliness."
David Williams - The Observer Magazine 17/06/2012Of the 2000 vintage, David Williams said: "There are three reasons why this wine might raise eyebrows. For one thing, it’ 20 quid for a bottle from a French region better known for rather cheaper fare. For another, it’s more than a decade old. Fortunately, the third reason is that it’s quite lovely – age doesn’t always bring beauty with wine, but this has matured beautifully, with its core of black and red berry fruit still perky, but its framework of tannin softened delectably."
The château is said to be the place where Jeanne Aymet had a love affair with the French King Henry IV in the 16th Century. The estate has belonged to Comtes Jean-Baptiste de Monpezat Family for many generations and they have been in partnership with the Vigouroux Family for 25 years. Bertrand Gabriel joined the company in 1989, he developed the vineyard management system and increased the number of estates and vineyards owned by the group.

Cahors is the capital of the Lot department in south-western France. It is one of the oldest wine regions in Europe where vines have been planted since Roman times. This is also the birthplace of the Malbec grape variety where it has been planted since 50BC. Cahors wines must have a minimum of 70% Malbec in the blend. The vineyards of Cahors were reinvented in the early 1970’s when a few forward thinking producers planted Malbec, Tannat and Merlot.

Worn leather and dark fruits. Fairly tannic even after 13 years. A good example of this style of wine, but maybe not for everyone...

Leave this wine to stand for 24 hours and decant before serving. Despite its age, it is still vibrant and medium ruby in colour. Medium+ intensity on the nose with ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit and elegant sweet spicy vanilla notes from the oak. On the palate, it is medium bodied with well integrated tannins. The black fruit character follows through on the palate and is more plummy leading to a savoury finish with a little spice. Medium+ length. This is a very good wine reflecting its region of origin well and the fruit is nicely balancing the structural components. It may age a little longer but it is ready for drinking now with a hearty meal.

This is my second case of this superb wine, nice with a nice meal or just to chill out with after a long day at work.

I love cahors wine but I'm afraid that this one is at the very end of it's vintage. On later investigation I find that cahors is not a very good wine for laying down anyway and that 2000 was a zero rated year. You get 'ought for nowt' but at half price it was nearly value for money.

These wines from Cahors at this age need great care in handling. After transit I leave them for a week and then always stand upright for 2 days before drinking. Even then they must be decanted carefully-discarding the last 30-40mm.

We like a smooth wine, and this really is nice, although we cannot write like a wine critic, to us, it was a really good buy

Everyone loved this one and it went far too quickly. My family all enjoy good Argentinian malbecs but this adds a lot of subtle extra flavours. Absolutely delicious!

The first two bottles of six had significant sediment and the bottom third of the bottle was pretty cloudy. The third was even more clody and the fourth completely cloudy despite standing on its end for four months. Very disappointing and not worth even the 50% discounted price. The very first glass was soft, fruity and with a long finish but overall the taste is now 'muddy' with a wierd mouth feel Even if the cloudiness made no difference to the wine it is still difficult to enjoy drinking something that looks so bad.

one bottle was corked and another had a very faint cork taint. Tesco wine direct staff very helpful though in refunding money. Wine itself is leathery and complex and good value

Bought a case of this at 50% off and have really enjoyed it. This wine is quite classy, the tannins have reduced and there is still plenty of fruit on offer.....silky smooth in the mouth and can be drunk on its own or with some cheese or red meat. I doubt it will get any better so drink up and lets hope Tesco get a newer vintage in!

Bought this wine as it looked good. Still not cheap at £10 per bottle, but a reduction from £20 suggested a very good wine. The first bottle was cloudy and a touch corked. The second was somewaht better, but it seemed like the wine was at the end of its shelf life. Will not buy again at any price.
