Abrau Durso is Russia’s oldest and largest producer of traditional method sparkling wine. It was founded in 1870 to produce wine for Tsar Alexander II, and until the Russian Revolution used French winemakers to ensure the best methods of production became established. After the revolution, Abrau Durso continued to expand, and was exclusive sparkling wine supplier to the Kremlin. Having survived the collapse of the USSR, since 2006 the company has planted 200 hectares of new vineyards and seen $20m of investment in the winery itself, bringing it back to the cutting edge of Russian wine production.
The Krasnodar region lies on the northeastern shore of the Black Sea, which moderates the temperature and gives a semi-Mediterranean climate. The vineyards are planted on chalky marl soils, and the grapes are harvested by hand.
