This blend is mostly Merlot, with a touch of Cabernet Franc, supple and beautifully balanced with incredible complexity.
It's rich with abundant dark plum flavours, spicy notes and velvet-soft tannins.
Rib of beef or roasted goose will both work brilliantly.
If you can, decant this wine before drinking – even if just for half an hour, giving it some time to breathe will really help it open up and show it off at its best.
This isn’t just any Saint-Émilion – it’s from one of the two best Châteaux. Occasionally the top Châteaux release small parcels at incredibly competitive prices but in complete secrecy, so we can’t name names. The quality of this wine is show-stoppingly good and at a fraction of the price of the Grand Vin.
There’s been a run of great vintages in Bordeaux and 2012 was no exception, producing wines with incredible depth and power. The Right Bank, where Saint-Émilion is situated, was particularly successful during this vintage thanks to its high proportion of early ripening Merlot grapes. The unique terroir - a sand and gravel plateau is overlooked by steep limestone slopes; all covered in beautifully tended vines. The Merlot grape grows especially well here.
