From Puglia in southern Italy comes this impressive wine made from the dark, spicy Primitivo grape-With notes of cherry and chocolate, this is great with smoky flavours such as spiced sausages and ribs.

The name Primitivo comes from the Latin word “primitivus” which translates as precocious. It was given the name because of its tendency to ripen earlier than most of the other wine grapes. It is the European twin of the Zinfandel grape. It is believed to have been first brought to Southern Italy by the Greeks. The wine was nurtured by the Benedictine monks in the 17th Century and its popularity has been growing ever since. It has now achieved a sort of cult status as an inexpensive delicious light and fruity wine, to enjoy with roasted or grilled meat, hard aged cheeses and game.
On the “boot” of the Italian peninsula, Puglia runs from the spur to the heel. This is a land of rich red earth, ancient olive groves and unspoilt coastlines. Puglia’s flat and sunny plains produce a prodigious harvest of wine as well as vegetables, fruit and grains such as the hard durum wheat commonly used to make pasta and bread throughout the region

My boyfriend and I generally love Primativo wines, bought this after reading reviews and were not disappointed. Really excellent wine and good value for money

I've always liked Primitivo though I am aware that many do not. There are Primitivos which are curiously tasteless but this is definitely not one of them. Oddly I've never seen this in store. A great drinking wine which I intend to present at the family Christmas get-togethers.

I usually head for something from South America but as my father in law is a fan of Italian wines I bought this for a change and was pleasantly surprised by the depth of flavour. We had it with roast leg of lamb spiked with garlic cloves and fresh rosemary sprigs and it complemented the meat beautifully. I found the flavour quite 'earthy' with a slight edge, but warming and agree that this would also be good with spicy sausage and smoky flavours or rich pasta dishes as it would act as a great foil for those tastes. A very 'moreish' wine that I would definitely buy again.

Love primitivo, and at the reduced price this one is a real bargain. Nice deep flavours but mellow and soft at the same time, I definitely recommend Orso and will keep buying it while it's at half price.

Good value at £5, but supposedly reduced from £10, but no way ever worth this sort of money

I always enjoy this wine, the grape is very good and has a good taste with body without being overpowering. Goes with all dishes and even good drinking on its own.

Consistently luscious and a family favourite. Very drinkable with or without a meal. Better than many other Italian wines we've tried in the past and will continue to be on our order list.

Nothing primitive about this one. I never really believe the blurb written about wine - but this really is a spicy red, and it genuinely cuts through even very strong-tasting Italian foods. Great value: delicious. There's something very special about these Italian country wines. This is powerful and full-boied - being on holiday in a bottle!

This is another of our favourites and we keep it in stock always, it tastes as good, if not better than many of it's more expensive competitors.

A disappointment after the 2010 but still a firm favourite - great wine for a party provided you give it some air to awaken the flavours - good body and certainly worth the discounted price. I would not pay £10 a bottle. Not a full bloodied Primitivo but still good

This wine I purchased when it was on offer. I found it to be a nice smooth "every day" wine. As it was so smooth, it could be drunk with a variety of meals. Would buy again.

This s one of my favorite reds from Italy, which sadly, I can only buy when it is on offer. It has a big round fruity flavour, bursting with hot dry sunshine! Can only be driunk in small quantities on its own, as it really needs some food to mop it up - try with an anti pasto platter - delicious! Definitely to be recommended.

This is one of the most drinkable wines yet! Have it with traditional Italian dishes - wild boar, country sausage, bolognese etc. - but just as good for the odd mid-week glass or two. Bit pricy at nearly £10 but at half price it's a bargain!
