Tasting Notes

The soft bouquet opens with cherry, raspberry and classic Pinot Noir spice, with subtle undertones of vanilla.

Supple and smooth on the palate with lashings of sweet fruit, finely polished tannins and balanced acidity; vibrant fruit flavours and varietal spice notes, the wine finished with great length and focus.

Storage Instructions

This wine is ideal for drinking now but can be kept for up to 2 years

Background

History

Plantagenet takes its name not only from its home, but also from its heritage. In 1968 in a stroke of serendipity English migrant Tony Smith, himself a descendent of the Plantagenets, invested his small inheritance in a farm called Bouverie in Western Australia’s Plantagenet Shire. The first vines he planted were Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and the first wines from these young vines were tight and lean and showed the elegant spice and fruit characters for which this area was to become known. In 1975 an apple packing shed on the main highway in the nearby town of Mount Barker was bought and converted into the region’s first winery and cellar door. While the apple packing shed is no longer in evidence, the winery and cellar door are still on the original land.

Regional info

Fruit was sourced mostly from the Rocky Horror vineyard with smaller quantities from the old Bouverie vineyard and Hayview vineyard, all from around Mount Barker, in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. All vineyards are carefully managed to yield moderately, with shoot and leaf removal employed for good fruit exposure. All vines grow on ironstone gravel loams with very minimal irrigation.
