Expert Opinion

In the press...

"There is a wonderfully fresh yeasty-savoury tang to the nose of this bone-dry white from the coastal sherry town Sanlucar de Barrameda, and it's met by a refreshing sea-salty flavour and a savoury bone-dry tang on the aftertaste. Chill!"

Anthony Rose - The Independent Magazine 05/05/2012

"A top dry sherry, here in a useful half bottle (freshness counts for a lot with this style). Tangy lemon and grapefruit zest, with a taste of salty, just baked bread. Serve well chilled in small quantities, topping up from the fridge."

Susy Atkins - Stella (The Sunday Telegraph) 08/07/2012

"A very fine Manzanilla with a classic tangy, salty kick: just about perfect."

Andrew Neather - Evening Standard 17/05/2012

Background

History

Bodegas Barbadillo, founded in 1821 and still 100% family-owned, is Spain’s leading producer of Manzanilla. Their magnificent cellars in Sanlucar de Barrameda are housed in centuries-old monuments overlooking the Guadalquiver river and the Atlantic Ocean. Solear is their premium Manzanilla with an average age of 6 years, the longest-aged manzanilla on the market and the "driest white wine in existence." Considered Spain's "definitive" Manzanilla.

Regional info

The DO of Manzanilla-Sanlucar de Barrameda established in 1933 is situated in the province of Cadiz. The lightly fortified wines made in this DO follow the traditional methods of winemaking based on the Solera and Criaderas system, a method of dynamic ageing in butts (oak barrels) located in the microclimate of the cellars in Sanlucar de Barrameda under a veil of yeasts called flor which gives these wines a unique and distinctive flavour.
