Tasting Notes

Chateau Pontet Canet was the most talked about wine of vintage and sold out almost immediately on release; Although 'only' a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification, the quality of the wine in 2009 was almost on a par with the First Growths; It was even given a perfect 100 out of 100 by influential Bordeaux critic Robert Parker; Biodynamically produced, the wine is rich and complex, packed with black fruit, prune and liquorice flavours - Stunning! James Griswood - Wine Buyer

What our expert says

17.5/20 Jancis Robinson

In the press...

An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. This cuvee should shut down in the cellar and re-open in a decade or more. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2075.

100 Points. Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate 20/02/2012

Regional info

Pauillac is situated in the heart of the Haut-Medoc and is arguably the most famous of the left bank appellations, not least because 3 of the 5 first growths are in the Pauillac appellation. The starting point for Pauillac's outstanding quality is the soil - largely free-draining gravel, which is ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. Although the Chateaux have become increasingly adept at creating their own individual character, nonetheless there is still an identifiable Pauillac style: full, rich and characterized by the classic cassis and cedarwood aromas of oak-aged Cabernet Sauvignon. The majority of Pichon-Lalande's vineyards are located to the south of the appellation on the border with St. Julien
