Background

History

Located on lime stone hillsides, our 30-year-old vineyard benefits from an excellent exposure to the south. The limestone-clay ‘tuf’ soil with high density of flint stones provides perfect conditions for the ripening of the grapes. The vines are cultivated with methods that keep in mind the preservation of the vineyard and the environment. Our goal is to obtain the best grapes using the least amount of diseases protection. Our methods include : sustainable farming, grass growing in the middle of the raw, little green manure, short pruning, de-budding, green harvest (pruning of excess grapes in mid-summer)… The vineyard is converting to organic production.

Regional info

At the heart of the Loire Valley, the vineyards of Vouvray are planted on the rolling slopes above the Loire river, just east of the ancient city of Tours and benefits from a balance of the continental and oceanic climates, offering long hot summers and cool winters. Planted with chenin blanc, a grape that is ideally suited to the soft local 'tuf' limestone, the appellation is renowned for its range of dry, off-dry and sweet wines.

Vouvray

We were in France in 1966 when someone extolled the virtues of Vouvray and the Loire. At a vineyard there, we visited the caves in the cliffs and miserably went away with only two bottles, having sampled at least a gorgeous free bottle. Shame! Since then, this Tesco Vouvray has been the staple of our "cellar". Maybe an acquired taste and wine snobs reckon it to be a "dessertish" wine, but we love it at any time; with its body, flavour and character over the cheaper Vouvray. Expensive for a pensioner's daily quaffing, but too good to be un-drunk for too long! Other non-Vouvray Chenin Blancs do not reach the opulence and quality of this Vouvray. A splendid sparkling Vouvray exists, but not in the UK, so far .
