Codorníu 1551 Vintage Cava Rosado 2009, Spain, 12%
A fantastic summer fizz, made from a blend of traditional Cava grapes- This is given colour and depth by a dash of Pinot Noir, resulting in a beautiful pink sparkler with lovely citrus aromas and a trace of strawberry- Especially good with tomato bruschetta.
Las Cometas Sauvignon Blanc Reserva 2011, Chile, 12.5%
Made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown in the stunning vineyards of Chile with the breathtaking backdrop of the Andes- Classic citrus fruit, with real warmth and ripeness too- Serve perfectly chilled, to accompany simply grilled fish.
Rosewater Park Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2012, Australia, 12%
A brilliant blend of two aromatic grapes, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, from south-east Australia- Think gooseberry from the Sauvignon and lime from the Semillon- Crisp, lively and perfectly balanced, this is a great match for barbecued chicken.
Colpasso Nero d’Avola 2011, Italy, 14.5%
Here, some of the grapes are picked early and dried – known as the ‘ripasso’ method – resulting in a wine with deeper flavours- Mellow, rich and intense, this gorgeous red is laden with black cherry and a hint of spice- Needs food with flavour: rib of beef or steak, ideally.
Higgovale Heights Shiraz Mourvèdre Viognier 2011, South Africa, 14.5%
Take two red grapes – Shiraz and Mourvèdre; add a splash of white – Viognier- The result? Expressive, rich, supple, long on flavour-This beauty is loaded with plum and blackcurrant, plus an aroma of violets- Serve with griddled lamb chops.
Lagunilla Rioja Reserva 2007, Spain, 13.5%
From the famous Lagunilla Rioja Bodega, this award-winning classic blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha is rich with smooth plum flavours and a hint of vanilla from careful oak ageing- Again, this is a serious food wine, best matched with roasted red meats rich in flavour.
