Background

History

Located in the Veneto region 30 km north-east of Venice, Botter was founded in 1928 by Carlo Botter. Over the years the company has developed from a local into an international export business while still being run by the Botter family. It is currently dealing with companies in over forty countries world-wide, from Scandinavia to South America. Although the company is primarily involved in bottling wine produced on various estates in the Veneto and in the other well-known Italian wine regions, the Botter family continues to make wines from its own vineyards: La di Motte estate in Veneto and Friuli . The family is deeply involved in making high quality wines with the help of skilled wine makers.

Regional info

Veneto vineyards cover 90,000 hectares (3rd) of which registered DOC plots total 35,400 hectares (2nd). Annual wine production of 8,500,000 hectolitres (3rd) includes 20% or 1,700,000 hectolitres DOC (1st), of which about 55% is white. Venice's region is Italy's leader in the production and commerce of classified wine. A major share of the DOC (which represents about 225 million bottles a year) consists of the Verona trio of Soave, Bardolino and Valpolicella. The plains northeast of Venice take in the Piave DOC zone, where Merlot and Cabernet dominate an expanding range of trendy varietals, though the local red Raboso and white Verduzzo still attract admirers. Treviso's province takes in the hills northwest of Venice between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, noted for the popular Prosecco, a dry to lightly sweet white, usually bubbly. In red wines, Merlot and Cabernet Franc have been the workhorse varieties of the central and eastern Veneto for decades.

Good robust Merlot. Nothing outstanding and at the advertised price of £9.99, i think there are better choices out there. However we bought from tesco when on offer at the £5 to £6 mark and at that price its good value.

A young wine that has all the body, colour and flavour of a more mature one. Allowed to breathe at room temperature, it takes on deeper aspects of fruitiness. Excellent on its own or with all vegetarian dishes, which is the only demands I have of a 'good red'. Good value and very enjoyable.

As a Merlot lover I found this wine smooth from the start, the ruby colour of this Merlot gave a bouquet of black currants, the fruit on the palate for me was plums with an after taste of vanilla, I wish I had ordered 12 bottles not 6 will buy this wine again, a must have for me.

Not a bad wine to say I bought it on offer and paid around £3 per bottle. Ideal for a party when quantity is better than quality.

I found this a very pleasant wine to drink, either with meals or on it's own. Would have given it five stars, but found it a little lighter than other Merlots I've enjoyed. Would have liked just a little more body.

Tried this wine at the Tesco Wine Fair and it got a tick in my guide. Was delighted to see it at practically half price at Tesco on line and ordered myself a case. It's a lovely red, easy to drink and goes down very well on a Friday evening :-)
