A dense, juicy Australian red with flavours of fresh blackcurrant and cherry combined with aniseed and mocha characters.

To enjoy this wine at its best, drink within 1 year of purchase.
Robert Parker, the American wine critic, dubbed this wine “one of the great wine bargains of the world!” This particular vintage, a gold-medal winner to boot, is awash with concentrated flavours of dark berries and a touch of mint in the background. A big-hitting blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, this still manages to be as elegant as it is powerful.
The first Pillar Box was erected in Australia after the introduction of postage stamps in the 1850’s/ Several of these elaborately designed receivers still exist as stoic reminders of a time when beauty could be found in the most mundane – even in the posting of one’s letters.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from our Padthaway vineyards. These vines are grown in various soil types including red loam, black loam and deep sand over limestone.

So this is a 2008 and the instruction is to “drink within one year of purchase”! And it’s 10 quid! It didn’t convince me when first opened of anything but a hefty, high-alcohol glass with that brown edge you get with older wine. Sure it’s dense but it lacks any brightness in the glass. I like big reds mind, but I don’t know what I wasn’t getting here. I tried it with some English cheeses and had to give up. I think it’s a bit better now 12 hours later but I’d be surprised if it would last another 12. I wouldn’t have said Australian; I’m thinking southern Rhone maybe Bordeaux too. I’m going to say that it’s past its best, it’s confusing now, it might have once been a classy wine but I think it’s gone. Certainly at a tenner I wouldn’t bother again. Probably not at all no matter what the price.

I used to buy a mixed case of Malbec from Tesco.com and enjoyed the varieties very much. When I first saw the Pillar Box Red bottle, it's label and name left a lot to the imagination. However, since Tesco no longer produce the mixed case, I have started to buy the Pillar Box Red on it's own in cases of 6. It's a very full-bodied, fruity wine, which would go equally well with steak, or a simple salad. I hope that it will be available from Tesco for a long time to come.

I've bought many great reds from Tesco; this wasn't one of them.

When you stick your nose in it, Wow ! Initially, you could almost smell it across another county, the aroma’s of dark blackcurrants and raspberries hit you like a sledgehammer made of Burnt rubber and liquorice.

This wine is one of the best australian red wines I have tried and easily holds its own against much more expensive reds.

A good, strong wine. You will probably argue over who had the most!

We first drank this wine in New York, and had difficulty finding it in UK. With 25% off the price, it is a bargain.
