Bodega Norton was founded in 1895 by Edmund J. P. Norton, an English engineer who was in Mendoza building the Buenos Aires to Mendoza railway. Norton built a winery and planted vineyards with vines imported from France in the Luján de Cuyo district. At this time the winery and estate was the first to be built south of the river Mendoza. In 1989 the winery was purchased by Austrian businessman, Gernot Swarovski and today is run by his stepson, Michael Halstrick.
Bodega Norton's winemaker, Jorge Riccitelli has an outstanding reputation both in Mendoza and further afield. He has been a mentor of many younger Mendozan winemakers, and is passionate about pursuing the Norton philosophy 'great wines are born in the vineyard'. He has been nominated as 'Winemaker of the Year 2012' by Wine Enthusiast magazine.
Five estate vineyards are located at different altitudes betwenn 850 and 1,100 metres above sea level, provide varied terroirs. Only thirty to fifty year old vines with low yields are used for the Reserva wines. Bodega Norton have sound working practices and are committed to looking after their farm workers who live on the estate. Families have lived on the estate for many generations, passing on their experience.
