My family, which was originally based in Gigondas in the region of the Vaucluse, has been cultivating vines throughout the southern Rhone Valley for over five generations. At the beginning of the last century, my maternal great-grandfather, August Chauvet, who was already a gold medal winner at the Paris Wine Show of 1900, was cultivating some 10 hectares of vines and several hectares of olive groves. His daughter, Juliette, married Gabriel Meffre, a young and ambitious winemaker from the neighbouring village of Seguret, and this couple would go on to become my grandparents. Gabriel and Juliette took upon themselves to uproot the olive groves in order to convert all of their land to viticulture, and it is from this act that our emblem of an olive tree sprouting a vine leaf is derived and adorns all of our bottles. In 1990 I joined together with my mother, Slyvette, in managing these properties and created the Famille Bréchet group of wineries.
The vineyards have an average age of 30 years and are located on the south-western slopes of the appellation on three different types of soils at varying altitudes. 65% are grown on blue-clay soils with a high proportion of gravel at an altitude of between 250 and 300 meters above sea level. 25% are grown on the sandy-clay soils of the Hautes Garrigues which are found between 200 and 250 meters above sea level. The final 10% are grown on chalk-clay soils at around 170m. These conditions stagger the ripening of the grapes giving a harvest period usually of around 3 weeks.
