Regional info

Madeira is a volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean, which is part of Portugal, despite the fact that it is geographically closer to North Africa. The islands of Madeira have a long winemaking history dating back to the Age of Exploration when Madeira was a standard port of call for ships heading to the New World or East Indies. On the long sea voyages, the wines would be exposed to excessive heat which transformed the flavour of the wine. This process is now recreated artificially by Madeira's unique wine

Much underestimated

Some people love this stuff, others are indifferent to it, or just prefer port. The fact seems to be most people never try it. Tesco sell it for £13 a bottle usually, this time they knocked off £2 a bottle then combined that with the 25% off promotion....fantastic! Pricewise this is at the lower end of the Madeira range, but it is a superb after dinner wine, sweet full bodied and with a long lasting and delicious aftertaste. If you haven't tried it yet give it a go, instead of Port, but be a bit cautious it's around 19% alcohol and it's cheaper than Vintage Port.......you can (and probably will) drink more of it.

This review is for the 2006 vintage

The first bottle of madeira i ever tried was a gift from my mum who had bought it while on holiday in madeira. That was excellent and this wine is equally as good. |If you've never tried it go on its a taste sensation. A wonderfully complex wine but simply drinkable.
