Situated on the right bank of the Gironde, just north-west of St. Emilion, Pomerol is the smallest of the Bordeaux regions. Unlike other appellations, it has no formal system of classification. Merlot is the dominant grape here which, together with the vein of iron rich clay running through the soil, helps to give the wines a uniquely rich and smooth character. Although they often more approachable at an early age, they are equally capable of great longevity
