Background
History
Nederburg was established in 1791 by a German immigrant, Phillipus Wolvaart. In 1937, Johann Graue took ownership and established Nederburg as the leading producer of quality South African wines. In 1956, Günther Brözel was appointed as winemaker and he was the first South African winner of the International Wine & Spirits Competition Winemaker of the Year Award. His exceptional technique and love for his craft have contributed to Nederburg claiming more awards than any other South African wine producer.

Nederburg is from the district of Paarl, which is just north of Stellenbosch in the Coastal Region. The Coastal Region is South Africa’s heartland of the production of fine wines. The climate is Mediterranean in character and well suited for production of wine being with influences of almost constant sunshine and the cooling effect of the Benguela current. The unirrigated soils of Nederburg's vineyards in Paarl are of granite and sandstone, which provide excellent, well draining terrain.
