Expert Opinion

In the press...

Of the 2011 vintage, Jane MacQuitty said: “Gorgeous, fat, squishy plum, chocolate and creosote-stash, bold yet juicy 14 per cent alcohol, new wave Spaniard, made from the country’s top red grape and punching above its humble table wine status.”

Jane MacQuitty - The Times 14/04/2012

Of the 2011 vintage, Jamie Goode said: “From 35 year old bush vines, this is a sweet, juicy red. There are flavours of black cherry and plum fruit, supported by a spicy structure, which is nicely savoury in style.”

Jamie Goode - S Magazine, Sunday Express 17/03/2013

great nose, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, Christmas pud and bayleaf. taste, sickly sweet to sour in 3 seconds with some bark. aftertaste, more sourness, tannin, bitterness and antiseptic bark at the end. I gave it 2/10 for the nose and nillo points for everything else. too young/too much alcohol I don't but it was not a pleasant experience.

There's always room for a few 'go to' bottles, wines that are reliable and suit different occasions without any worry about drinking something rather special inappropriately. This fits the bill. It's warm,delicious--- and undemanding without being boring.I'd certainly buy this bargain again.

I am very impressed with this wine, I have tasted wine far more expensive than this that has been watery and no punch to it. But this wine represents excellent value for money and ticks all the right boxes!!

A gutsy full bodied Spanish wine, very good value, goes well with all strong flavoured garlic dishes, for example pork cooked slowly with tomatoes onions and garlic.

This wine is a Tesco suggested replacement for a much better quality Rioja. My main gripe is its a poor substitute and you have to be Samson to unscrew the stopper.

' A RICH MOUTHFEEL ' , WHAT A JOKE ! IT TOOK THE SKIN OFF MY TEETH.THE DESCRIPTION IS FAR FROM WHAT I EXPERIENCED AND HAS LEAD ME TO BE SUSPICIOUS OF ANY OF TESCO ' FINEST ' RANGE. I HAVE HAD TO USE IT FOR COOKING AND MULLED WINE.

The wine would be better with a meal rather than on its own. Has a good berry flavour. Not one of the best finest we have tried. But it is worth buying if reduced.

Great Expectations but!

Looks and sounds like a bargain and with it being a Tesco 'Finest' you expect it to be well above average, I am thankful I only bought 6 bottles as I wanted to check it out. Whilst very smooth tasting it has no body whatsoever and is so dry it leaves ones mouth 'claggy' for want of a better description. Pity I cannot find how to return or exchange it It is so bad I cannot even contemplate giving it away, Be warned!

this wine is a really good everyday wine. I was slightly disappointed that a 'finest' wine wasn't better than others I've had before but nothing wrong with it!

Oh, it may be a blend but it is remarkably constant in quality., Drink when quaffing or eating. Fruity and in no way bitter as are some fancy Spanish reds. Well worth the price.

This was a good deal. The wine was not too dry. A nice dark colour and every bottle was consistent. I do not usually choose a tempranillo wine so I was pleasantly surprised by this.

Feeling Brave ?

Tried this after reading other reviews. Have to say that we were very disappointed. Dressed-up with an attractive label our expectations were high but, in short, at best this only just warrants ranking as an average Tempranillo. It has been over-oaked in a failed effort to soften the harsh finish on the palate. Try something else.

We really like this one. We first had Extramadura wine in the region while travelling in Spain last year and so were pleased to try Tesco's Finest version. Very good and typical of the type. It's refreshing to taste wine that reflects the Old World style and character We buy it even when it's NOT on special offer!

This was a wine that I hadn't tried so, after reading good reviews, I 'took a chance' - and what a great result ! It really is better than I expected. I've done the cheap Spanish wines on holiday - and gradually got used to them ! - but this one is instantly likeable.

This is a fabulous Spainish wine! For those of us old enough to remember wine from Spain in the 70's and 80's it could have left us put off wine from Spain for ever. If you are in doubt about Spainish wine try this one. It is a soft gentle red yet full of ripe berry flavours. It is not overly oaky and has a slight vanilla on the finish. Superb with most dishes or great to drink on its own. One of our favourites.

We have ordered this wine before. Although it is 14%, it is not a cloying wine. We are not connoisseurs, but just enjoy a very drinkable wine. Especially Spanish Tempranillo and Rioja. We will definitely be ordering this wine again. Well done Tesco Finest!
