Expert Opinion

In the press...

This has all the freshness of a good white burgundy yet balances it with a depth of pineapple and other rich flavours.

Brian Elliot - Scotland on Sunday 18/07/2010

Ripe, creamy fruit quality with juicy oranges and orchard fruits over a light hazelnut and oatmeal base. Deliciously crisp and juicy on the palate. This has a searing core of pithy lemon acidity that adds definition and extends the finish. Score: 89/100 − £19.99 at Tesco

Background

History

Bertrand Straebler was born in 1963. He became the Winemaker for Labouré-Roi in 1995. “Initially, I modelled my wine by imitating the older, traditional produce. Later, I let my imagination roam, abandoning empirical methods & modelling the vines with the respect they deserve. I always maintained the authentic balance of the landscape & soil. Every year, I work hard to respect what nature entrusts to me & pass on this creative work, to give pleasure to all those who love great Burgundy wines.”

Regional info

The village of Meursault is located in the centre of the Cote de Beaune, and with 1,080 acres under vines (including 326 acres of Premier Crus) it is the largest of the predominantly white wine producing appellations of the Cote d’Or. Only a very little red wine is made, for the world-wide reputation of the village is based on the ripe, buttery and slightly nutty taste that the Chardonnay grape provides on the clayey/limestone soil.
