Regional info

The Madiran appellation is situated in south-west France. Chateau Laroche Veilla is situated in the heard of Madiran, in the commune of Viella, reputed for its vineyards since the 1850’s. The nearby Pyrenees and Atlantic Ocean maintain a mild, almost maritime climate. Autumn is this region’s trump card: it boasts remarkable amounts of sunshine which enable the winegrowers to delay the harvest, only picking late on when the grapes are truly ripe. The Tannat grape traditionally associated with Madiran was first grown in the Pyrenean Piedmont. It is a cross of several strains of wild vines, and is very well suited to the highly distinctive climate of the Madiran area.

A good buy!

This is a full bodied wine with bags of flavour. Beware though as it has lots of malic acid so there is a sediment. Best if decanted.

I poured most of the first bottle down the sink. It was more like vinegar than wine. I havent a clue what to do with the other bottle except to repeat things.

Don't even go there with this wine. Very quickly returned it to the store when the first bottle was corked and the second bottle taste like ear wax.Does Tesco only reserve its worst wine to go in the sale?

wine is great but is little acidic, ok with mature cheese and meat dishes. Would not drink it on its own.

Mature Red

A wine with a good body and nose, smooth with a gentle berry taste, makes this an excellent older red.

Hoped this wine would be a good mature example of a Madiran, but was very dissapointed. A lot of sediment so must be decanted, but even this doesn't bring the wine back to life. My second bottle tasted like vinegar. Do not be tempted. Do not buy.

An acquired taste

It is what it says on the label but I didn't get much mint! Madiran and the Tannat grape can be very powerful, heavy tanins and can be 'rough' without much finesse. However this particlar vintage has had time to 'come to' and is a big mouthful and best with food rather than as an aperitif. I liked mine with a rare steak. Really good value.

Will time improve it?

The problem with the tannat grape is that by the time the tannins have softened the fruit has usually disappeared. This wine still has some way to go,it is still quite chewy but perfectly drinkable. It could become superb or it might mellow into something ok but fruitless, i.e 5 or 2 star. I don't know which way it will go. Nevertheless Tesco should be commended for stocking an off the beaten track product.

Madiran 96

Does throw a sediment but excellent value and priviledge to drink a 16 year old wine that still has tannins and will keep longer.

This is a wonderful example from a little known wine from a little know area, but it is brilliant, and from a lovely vintage

When it's good it's very good, but...

I've tried quite a few bottles of this wine. Mostly it's rich and savoury, slightly rustic with a firmness of texture which belies its age. There have been, however, a number of flawed bottles. I'd expect an "off" bottle every so often, but incidents of TCA are much more frequent here than the average. If you're thinking of serving this one it it's best to have something else in reserve just in case.

Unfortunately this wine does not come close. I have tasted same year from another producer and given the same amount of care by decanting the wine. All the TLC I could but no life was evident.

The only game in town!

Years ago, a french friend introduced me to madiran with grouse. Madiran needs age, and this wine has just reached its peak. Dark, spicy, and with a lingering finish of chocolate. After all those years in the bottle it needs time to breathe (at least two hours), then serve it with roast grouse (no more than 15 to 20 minutes in a hot oven), game chips and bread sauce. It is called the" entente cordiale".
