Vergelegen, meaning “situated far away”, was granted to the Governor of the Cape in 1700 and the property has had a long and fascinating history since that time. Vergelegen has twice won the Château Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse-de-Lalande Trophy for best red blend and readers of South Africa’s leading wine magazine, Wine, have voted Vergelegen the country’s best producer for five successive years. This inspiring property has the reputation for being one of South Africa’s leading ‘icon’ wine estates.

Climate at Vergelegen is mild due to its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean at False bay six kilometres away. Vineyard sites range in altitude between 140m and 310 m above sea level with slopes facing north to north-west, and south to south-east. The latter comprise the cooler sites where Sauvignon Blanc is planted. The warmer northern slopes are suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Vergelegen boasts 21 different soil types and they are among the most ancient viticultural soils in the world.
