A deep, purplish ruby-red in colour, this wine has a lively nose, an impressive display of red and black fruit, and delicate touches of sweet spice, cloves, and caramel.
The palate is smooth and elegant with well-rounded tannins that provide tremendous structure and lively balanced acidity that foretells that this wine, though still young, has excellent cellaring potential.
The Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley - 100km North of the capital. Recognising that this valley, with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes, Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world class vineyard.
The grapes for our Max Reserva Merlot 2009 are grown in our Max I and Max IV vineyards in the Valle de Aconcagua, a region with a lengthy dry season and moderately warm days due to the cooling effects of the afternoon breezes that blow in from the Pacific Ocean. Max I was planted to French clone 181 in 1978; in Max IV, French clone 346 was grafted onto Cabernet Sauvignon in 1993. The vertically trained vineyards were planted on north- and north-east-facing hillsides with a 5° slope. The soils at Max I are thin, with decomposed granite and low vigour potential, while those of Max IV are colluvial in origin with a deeper layer (1.2 m / 3.9 ft) of clay-loam and no stone content. These soil profiles offer low to moderate vigour potential and an excellent balance between the foliage and the fruit load.
