2009 was a great vintage across the board, and the 'Petit Chateaux' represent particularly good value this year - with plenty of the showy ripe berry fruit typical of this vintage, the Chateau Clauzet is perfect now or can be cellared and enjoyed for the next few years.
Saint-Estephe is situated at the northern end of the Haut-Medoc region of Bordeaux on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. Unlike the other key Medoc areas, the soil here has less gravel and a higher proportion of clay which helps to give the wines of St. Estephe their own distinctive character: They are often richer in colour and flavour and are known for their longevity. Although there are some outstanding classified St. Estephe chateaux (of which Cos d'Estournel is arguably the most famous), most of the wine here is produced as Cru Bourgeois and so it's often a source of excellent wine, often at very good prices
