Tasting Notes

Made in the southern French Vin de Pays d'Oc wine region, this is a joyous combination of the Carignan, Grenache and Mourvèdre grapes.

Rich and ripe with plum and black cherry fruit, its also got a deliciously subtle hint of dark chocolate.

Spot on match for cottage pie.

Expert Opinion

In the press...

Of the 2012 vintage, Susy Atkins said: "The new vintage of Finest Cotes Catalanes Carignan, from warm Languedoc Roussillon, satisfies our urge for an honest, gutsy barbeque red. Expect bags of redcurrant and bramble fruit, ripe and ready to stand up to chargrilled red meats."

Susy Atkins - Stella, Sunday Telegraph 02/06/2013

Of the 2012 vintage, Olly Smith said: “Genius red. It has a wondrous perfume and full-fruit flavour, like a punnet of wild black fruit has been crushed in your glass. Stunning value.”

Olly Smith - Event Magazine, Mail on Sunday 16/06/2013

Of the 2012 vintage, Victoria Moore said: "I just love this. The warm, dry slopes of the Languedoc in a bottle. All dried herbs, split ripe figs and juicy brambles."

Victoria Moore - Telegraph Weekend 13/07/2013

Of the 2012 vintage, David Williams said: "The Carignan variety had a reputation for being a bit of a plodding workhorse until recently. I've written about two chunky versions from Chile here before, but there are examples in the variety's southern French home too. This one, made from vines up to 100 years old in Roussillon down near Spain, has crunchy red and black fruit, olive and scrubby aromatic herbs."

David Williams - The Observer Magazine 07/09/2013

Of the 2012 vintage, Jane MacQuitty said: "Juicy, raspberry and mocha-styled, bargain-basement Roussillon red, made from old Carignan vines."

Jane MacQuitty - The Times 05/10/2013

Of the 2012 vintage, David Williams said: "This red from Catalan France has been a hit with the wine-writing fraternity, and it's one of the best value wines around. The gnarly old carignan vines deliver deep but succulent brambly fruit and scrubby herbs in a rare sub-£7 bottle with a genuine sense of place."

David Williams - Observer Food Monthly 08/12/2013

Of the 2012 vintage, Helen McGinn said: "This is full of squished (technical term) bramble fruits. Carignan is the grape, and it’s got a really warm, spicy character to it. Serve this at your party and the guests won’t leave. You have been warned."

Helen McGinn - Daily Mail 21/12/2013
