“Not even a million litres of Vinho Verde is drunk in the UK, so top up the tally and select a bottle of Tesco’s non-vintage Vinho Verde, with lots of easy-drinking briny, verdant fruit and a hint of sweetness.”

Tesco had two Vinho Verdes on show at the tasting, which goes to show how this region's light zippy whites have returned to favour in recent years. We prefer the Finest* version, but this isn't half bad for the money, a traditional four-way blend of Azal, Pederna, Trajadura and Loureiro that is brisk and easy with peachy fruit-salad flavours and plenty of citrusy acidity.
Vinho Verde literally means 'green wine' referring to its youthful freshness rather than its colour. The winemaker for this wine has 20 years of experience.
The province of Minho lies in the northeast of Portugal & has a cool climate with a lot of rainfall. The low temperatures & limited sunshine give the wines from this region their natural high acidity.
