Expert Opinion

In the press...

Of the 2014 vintage, Hamish Anderson said: “Originally from south-west France, malbec has become Argentina’s signature variety. Tesco has got one of the country’s leading producers, Catena, to fashion its Finest version. As a result, this – at a price where often the grape is a sickly parody of itself – is a classy glass. Its flavours of plum, violet and spice are ideal for a meat-led barbecue.”

Hamish Anderson - Daily Telegraph Magazine 18/07/2015

Of the 2014 vintage, Anthony Rose said: “Spicy, with nutmeg on the nose, this youthful red made from the Malbec grape in the Cape’s Swartland region is blackberry juicy from sweet start to savoury finish.”

Anthony Rose - The Independent Magazine 15/08/2015

Of the 2014 vintage, Matthew Jukes said: “You don’t have to be Nostradamus to know I’d match a Malbec with Sirloin steak with béarnaise sauce. This hearty red from the Catena winery is a must have for all carnivorous feasts.”

Matthew Jukes - Weekend, Daily Mail 17/10/2015

Of the 2014 vintage, Jamie Goode said: “This is a bargain: it’s a lovely, rounded, smooth red with sweet berries and a juicy brightness. It demonstrates that Malbec can really deliver at this price.”

Jamie Goode - S Magazine, Sunday Express 24/01/2016

From the very beginning The Wines of Catena set out to discover the best places to plant vineyards in Mendoza, identifying the best microclimates for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Malbec. In addition, new techniques of cluster thinning and harvest practices were implemented to further increase concentration. This research program also led to the conclusion that the poor soils near the Andes, were actually ideal for quality viticulture. And that the desert climate was an asset because it allowed vineyard managers to control quality and hang time through strict irrigation control. Winemaker Felipe Stahlshmidt is an avid andinista that has climbed the mighty Aconcagua Mountain 7 times!

Regional info

Tucked under the massive shoulders of the Andes Mountains in west central Argentina, the province of Mendoza is renowned for housing some of the best winegrowing regions of Argentina. The character of Mendoza wines is forged in high altitude desert vineyards irrigated by mineral-rich snowmelt from glaciers and snowfields. Altitudes range from 1,000 feet to around 5,000 feet, where the foothills rise steeply toward the Andes' peaks. High altitude means cool temperatures and clear air, and clear air means more sunlight for building flavor in the grapes, helping to make Mendoza the source of Argentina's well-earned reputation for top quality, unique wines.
