Montepulciano d'Abruzzo represents over 80% of all DOC wines made in Abruzzo. A number of historical documents demonstrate that the Montepulciano grape has been grown in the region since the mid-700s and that it has found its place of choice in this region. In the past it was cultivated in the Peligna Valley, in the province of L'Aquila and on the hills in Pescara, while since the 1950s cultivation has been extended to all the hills along the coast and today it is the main red grape variety in Abruzzo.
The region of Abruzzo is located in central Italy and stretches from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea, on a mostly mountainous and wild terrain. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grapes are uniquely sourced from vineyards located on hills or on plateaux, with a maximum altitude of 500 metres above sea level, or exceptionally 600 metres for south-facing vineyards. The maximum yield for the grapes must not be over 40 hectolitres per hectare while the minimum alcoholic strength must be 11,5% vol.
