Tasting Notes

Made from Argentina's most famous grape and by the country's most famous producer of Malbec, Catena.

This is a wonderful, heady mix of dark bramble fruits, plum and blueberry too.

Absolutely loves being teamed up with steak.

Expert Opinion

In the press...

Of the 2013 vintage, Jane MacQuitty said: "You'll need a big juicy steak to tame this burly, spiced red fruits of a malbec from Catena, Argentina's first and still best malbec producer."

Jane MacQuitty - Weekend, The Times 13/09/2014

Of the 2013 vintage, Brian Elliot said: "Black cherry flavours also figure prominently in 2013 finest* Argentinian Malbec ..... but here the cherries are joined by cassis and sweeter elements such as cinnamon and marzipan. Both the more structured tannins and sharper acidity suggest that this may be the better of the South American versions with robust food - or ones with a higher fat content."

Brian Elliot - Spectrum Magazine, Scotland on Sunday  12/10/2014

Of the 2013 vintage, Olly Smith said: "For a highly drinkable and fairly priced Malbec, Tesco finest* Argentina Malbec is big on flavour but manages to avoid being a complete headbanger."

Olly Smith - Event Magazine, Mail on Sunday 07/12/2014

Of the 2013 vintage, Matthew Jukes said: “There is only one fact to consider here. This wine is made by none other than the great Catena winery – South America’s greatest wine dynasty. At the discounted price this might suggest that this wine is in some way an inferior product. Not on your life – this is a spectacular Malbec and it delivers class and distinction in every molecule. Epic party wine never tasted so good.”

Matthew Jukes - Weekend, Daily Mail 13/12/2014

Background

History

From the very beginning The Wines of Catena set out to discover the best places to plant vineyards in Mendoza, identifying the best microclimates for Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Malbec. In addition, new techniques of cluster thinning and harvest practices were implemented to further increase concentration. This research program also led to the conclusion that the poor soils near the Andes, were actually ideal for quality viticulture. And that the desert climate was an asset because it allowed vineyard managers to control quality and hang time through strict irrigation control. Winemaker Felipe Stahlshmidt is an avid andinista that has climbed the mighty Aconcagua Mountain 7 times!

Regional info

Tucked under the massive shoulders of the Andes Mountains in west central Argentina, the province of Mendoza is renowned for housing some of the best winegrowing regions of Argentina. The character of Mendoza wines is forged in high altitude desert vineyards irrigated by mineral-rich snowmelt from glaciers and snowfields. Altitudes range from 1,000 feet to around 5,000 feet, where the foothills rise steeply toward the Andes' peaks. High altitude means cool temperatures and clear air, and clear air means more sunlight for building flavor in the grapes, helping to make Mendoza the source of Argentina's well-earned reputation for top quality, unique wines.
