‘Nothing had prepared me for the unique experience of a stay in the famous Ice Hotel in Kiruna, Lapland. Situated 200km inside the Arctic Circle, it is rebuilt entirely from snow and ice every year from the Torne River.

‘Spending the night on a bed of snow and ice, covered with reindeer skins, at -5°C, was one of the most surreal experiences of my life, but surprisingly it wasn't the coldest – I was snug in my sleeping bag.

‘After warming up in the sauna I was ready to head out for some serious sledding. Pulled by a team of 10 husky dogs we sped silently along the path of the frozen river Torne on a truly mesmerising journey. My trip showed that you don't need to believe in Santa to see that Lapland is a fairy-tale land.'

Winter sun

You won't be getting the blues this winter as there are plenty of bargain breaks to hot destinations on offer. Places such as Kenya are terrific for value-for-money holidays because charter flights operate there, and the pound is still strong, making it cheaper on arrival.
