Tesco Health Check
Eating too much saturated fat may put people in danger of high cholesterol levels and raises the risk of heart disease and stroke. Luckily, The Tesco Health Check service, available at over 250 in-store Pharmacies nationwide, makes it easy to keep an eye on your well-being.
Completely confidential, it takes only 30 minutes to monitor weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and be screened for diabetes. Any targets are agreed and you get a pack containing handy hints, a pedometer, a one-day gym pass and 10 free weigh-ins to help kickstart a healthier lifestyle.
In January, the full health check-up is 75 per cent off at only £5* and is available to everyone over 18 (except pregnant women). Just make an appointment at the Pharmacy counter. Call 0800 505555 for your nearest in-store Pharmacy or visit www.tesco.com for more details.
*Offer runs 1-27 January, normal price £20
Future of jabs to come
Oxford University has begun clinical trials to test a new, universal flu vaccine that could offer long-term protection against strains including human mutations of bird flu. At present doctors can only vaccinate against certain strains of flu and have to change the formulation every year in response to new ones.
If the trials are successful, Oxford University says the vaccine will be further tested before approval for use.
Eyes right
Professional sight tests from Tesco are not just about helping you see better, they are also an important health check. For example, did you know age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of registered blindness in the Western world? Many people have never heard of it. The disease takes two forms, dry and wet, and causes progressive loss of central vision by attacking the central part of the retina vital for reading, driving, watching TV and recognising people.
Initially, AMD can have no symptoms, but regular eye checks by an optician can detect AMD. Eye tests are available at over 100 Tesco opticians. For more information, or to find your nearest optician, go to www.tescoopticians.com, or call 0845 6013479.
Little ones covered
Parents have extra reassurance about children's health with the new Tesco Child Health Plan. It gives speedy access to consultations and tests and covers operations if there's an NHS waiting list of over six weeks. First year premiums are £9·99 a month for the first child then £8·99 for every other. And new customers from 8 January to 1 April get 750 Clubcard points.
