Going green newsFinding a way forward
We are all becoming increasingly
aware of climate change and what
we, organisations and individuals
alike, can do to become greener and
to help cut our carbon emissions.

At Tesco we too feel we know how
we can contribute and we're already
getting on with it. From strategies for
cutting waste to investing in
low-carbon technologies that reduce
energy use, such as using zero
emission electric delivery vans for
Tesco.com or using geo-thermal
heating at our Shrewbury eco store.

Our CEO Sir Terry Leahy (above)
has also committed us to making it
easier for all Tesco customers to
take the green option whenever
possible. He says, 'We want to see
green consumption become mass
consumption, and break down the
barriers to being environmentally
friendly by helping to make the
green movement a real option for
everyone, not just the few.'

We know it's hard work, but if we all
do a little bit, together we can make
a big difference. That's why we've
increased the number of stores with
automated recycling machines that
sort and crush your bottles. We also
think it's important to reward you for
helping out where possible, which is
why we offer green Clubcard Points
when you recycle or reuse any
carrier bag or use a Bag for Life.

Just a few of the ways in which
together we can all do our bit
and know that 'every little helps'.

Save the forestsSaving our forests and wildlife
Responsible forest management to
protect our woods and wildlife habitats
is especially important for the health of
the planet as the trees help absorb
carbon dioxide. Tesco has substantially
reduced the amount of carboard used
in its packaging; where possible this
is from recycled material and where it
isn't only sustainable sources are used.
Last year Tesco recycled 285,000 tonnes
of cardboard used in its stores.

The new designer range of Tesco Bags
for Life, from 35p each, includes a natty
jute version. Don't forget shoppers earn
green Clubcard Points when they re-use
any shopping bag, including the regular
10p Bag for Life, which can be
exchanged or recycled into other plastic
products such as black bin liners. We're
on target to reduce carrier bags by 1
billion by May 2008 – and to help, you
can even choose a plastic bag-free
home delivery at Tesco.com.
