Women unite in Race for Life
Cancer Research UK's Race for Life 2008 is the UK's largest women-only fundraising event where women of all ages and fitness levels are invited to come together to walk, jog or run 5k and raise money to help beat cancer. Enter one of the 262 events being held all over the country between 3 May and the end of July, and not only raise money for Cancer Research UK's life-saving work, but take the opportunity to get fit, too. Supported by Tesco for the seventh year running, every event has hundreds of moving stories:

Terri, 41, is running for her son Matthew. 'Matthew was 14 when diagnosed with leukaemia last November. We spent five weeks in St James Hospital in Leeds where the cancer ward was full of children and teenagers whose bravery and spirit shone through. Matthew has another two years of treatment to go, which wouldn't be possible without all the research that goes into it, for which I'm eternally grateful. He just takes it all in his stride – I am so proud of my son.' To enter now visit www.raceforlife.org or call the hotline on 0871 641 2282.

Pump action
It's a clever idea: a water pump powered by a children's roundabout, bringing fresh clean drinking water from deep underground to African communities. These amazing energy-saving PlayPumps have been funded by the profits from bottles of One Water, sold in Tesco. Backed by Nelson Mandela, the PlayPumps' fresh water helps villages thrive while slowing the spread of waterborne diseases. They also help to keep schools open longer, increasing attendance and allowing children to run around in breaks without getting dehydrated. As well as selling One Water, Tesco has funded its first African roundabout water pump and, with your help, hopes to continue to provide support in 2008.

The nation's biggest school activity competition, the 2008 Fitter Schools UK Challenge, has launched, encouraging schools to hit their target of two hours, PE a week. Free to enter in primary and secondary categories, the winners will demonstrate most improvement in pupil fitness over roughly 14 weeks and receive thousands of pounds of sports equipment and coaching, including Tesco Sport for Schools and Clubs vouchers. For more information visit www.fitterschools.uk.com or call 0845 456 3233.
Tesco is selling special bunches of daffodils at £1·99 in support of Tesco Charity of the Year Marie Curie Cancer Care from February to April. It is hoped this will raise at least £10,000 to go towards the charity's target of £2·5 million, which will fund an extra 125,000 hours of nursing care. If you want to help, why not get involved in one of the many events taking place during the charity's Great Daffodil Appeal in March.
Marie Curie Cancer Care's Great Daffodil Appeal runs in March, with fundraising events including Devoted to Life Walks and Daffodil Runs. Proceeds will help the current Tesco Charity of the Year provide more free specialist nursing care at home for terminally ill patients. You can support the appeal by wearing a daffodil badge, buying daffodil umbrellas or wellies from Marie Curie Cancer Care Shops, or with your own fundraising. For more information visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil or call 0845 601 3107.
