Stephanie, Human Resources Manager, Tesco Southwark
Hi my name is Stephanie, I’ve been working for Tesco for 8years, I work here in Tesco Southwark. I first started off as a general assistant and had the opportunity to work my way up to section manager level. I’m now the resources manager for this store and I deal with mainly recruitment amongst a few other things which is looking after our staff and making sure I promote the benefits and celebrate different cultures and diversities.
Here at Tesco Suffolk we work with job centre plus, sure trust and rentploy to make sure we get a different range of people in the communities to come and work at our store to help celebrate the different cultures and diversities.

Catherine, Personnel Manager, Tesco Burnage
Hi I’m Catherine Butler and I’m the personnel manager here at Tesco in Burnage which is in Manchester. I’ve worked here and opened the store in September 2005. We currently employ 303 employees and at the time we opened the store we created a partnership scheme between Manchester City Council and ourselves and recruited approximately 80 people out of long term unemployment, and we put them through college and gave them Adult literacy and Numeracy skills and then guaranteed them a job at the end of that placement.
You wont be able to see but we are actually right in the heart of the community here, we have a very diverse employment base and we recruit within 15 miles of our store.
We have also got together with Manchester City Council to help make our store greener and got together a travel plan and we try and encourage as many as possible to walk to work, cycle or car share.
One of the great things we did when we opened the store we tried to introduce as many local suppliers as possible. One of the key things that I especially love are the vine ripe tomatoes that we get from Cheshire which is no more than 20 miles away from this store which all helps make us a local supplier

Emma, Pharmacy, Tesco Southwark
Hi, my name’s Emma, I've worked at Tesco Southwark for almost 11 years, I work in the Pharmacy department. There are lots of different career opportunities within the store but for someone like me they do a lot of flexible hours which enables me to pick my child up from school and just work during school hours. I live locally as well so it doesn’t cost too much on the bus fares so you can get in and out. That’s about it really, it’s a nice store generally everyone is nice in the area.
Jimmie, Produce Manager, Tesco Wolverton
So, hi, my name is Jimmie, I work for our Wolverton store that’s in Milton Keynes. I’ve been with the company for 5 years as a grocery manager and basically that means I’m the guy that makes your shelves replenished and full when you come into the store.
My role varies really, you know, from one day I’ll be making sure the shelves are replenished and full and looking tidy for you and on the other hand I’ll be helping you do your shopping. Sometimes we get people who can’t shop for themselves, we do assisted shopping that kind of falls under my role as well. And other things are, dealing with customer complaints when you guys are not happy, obviously, we know we get it right 99% of the time but there’s 1% that we don’t get it right and when that happens I’m always there to give you a bit of support really. So, it is a good rewarding job the customer satisfaction is my satisfaction, and sort of enjoy it really.
Paul Holloway, Store Manager, Tesco Wolverton
Hello, my name is Paul Holloway and I’m the store manager here at Tesco Wolverton. I’ve been in this store now for 8 months and have worked for the company for 23 years in various roles across the country.
In this store we employ 354 people, most of those people are local to the area and Wolverton is on the outskirts of Milton Keynes, and what you tend to find in this area, is that we tend to serve this community as a whole so people don’t tend to go into Milton Keynes they tend to shop more in this store so as part of the community we feel that we are a big part of that.
Tesco is also seen as an equal opportunities employer, if we look at myself, I started off in the business as a general assistant and worked myself up so for development purposes, everyone has a chance if they want to grab it then it is there for them
We also offer different other aspects of education as well, we have got apprenticeships schemes within our stores within Wolverton we offer apprenticeship, we offer A-level graduates we also offer degree foundation courses which as a store we also pay for, so you know the opportunities to develop and also to get an education within Tesco is also vast and we also look at making sure our people can get and develop a career within Tesco which is so so important.
Look at it this way somebody, when I started within the company, somebody gave me a chance to get on and believed in me, what we have got to do as managers is to believe in our staff and give them opportunities to get on as well.
Ralph, Duty Manager, Tesco Express Welwyn Village
Hi there, my name is Ralph, I work at Tesco express in Welwyn Village, it’s a small store and employs roughly between 20 and 25 people. I live locally just up the road so I have quite a good feel of the local community. And I am, its good I get to know quite a few of the customers that come in and that means we can give them excellent service, which is always good as people like to come back to the store again
I have worked in agriculture for many years and now for Tesco, I work closely with growers and packers to ensure the quality standards are never compromised for customers and have enjoyed the relationship we have built over the years. These suppliers enjoy the volume which Tesco has to offer, a range that is wide to utilise the majority of their crops and prices that allow investment to continue. This is offered not only on a daily basis, but the commitment is made with annual programs sharing the volume growth and expectations for the yearly deliveries.
Tesco rarely moves from one supplier to another, they are incredibly loyal and spend time to help a supplier develop, not change for a cheaper one.
Johnathan Sutton
I work on the Non food department I have always been taught to take the customer into account first and this I feel has helped to make Tesco successful.
Hiren Desai
I have been working for Tesco for 6 years now and they are a great company to work for. They supported me through my time at University whilst I worked for them on a part time basis and I then went full-time on graduating. I am now looking to progress to management level and have applied for the training course. There's a great atmosphere here and I work in a good team and everyone gets on well.
James Elliot, Stock Control
I joined Tesco 11 years ago and really enjoy working here. I recently applied for the management course and hope to start that soon. This summer I will be running Race for Life with some of the other girls from here – there’s a great team spirit!
Kerrie Slevin, Stock Control
Since joining Tesco 10 years ago I have worked my way through from Produce to Frozen and am now in the Grocery department. I really like my job on the shop floor and enjoy meeting different people everyday and helping where I can.
Adam Donaldson, Grocery
I work in a small team and everyone gets on well. I’ve been here 4 ½ years now and hope to possibly progress to management one day. It’s good to have the opportunity.
Andy Dunn, Grocery
I'm really looking forward to running in Race for Life in a few weeks time - a few of us girls are doing it together and dressing up in Pink. It should be a good laugh! I really enjoy working here. There is a good atmosphere and team spirit, and the management team are really encouraging. I have signed up to the management training course and am looking forward to progressing my career with the company.
Emily Brown, Price Integrity
I enjoy the daily interaction with people and the variety of work the job brings. I have worked for Tesco for 30 years now so that shows I think they are a good company to work for! As manager I also do a lot of work in the local community by visiting schools, universities and women's groups and talking about Tesco as a brand and also about healthy eating and the benefits of using a Clubcard.
Sean O'Mara, Store Manager
I started my career at Tesco as a part-time produce assistant and have worked my way up to Stock Control Manager by taking part in several training courses along the way. I am also the in-store first aider and union representative. They are a good team at this store and I enjoy being part of that.
John Arnold, Stock Control Manager
Tesco is one of the UK's major employers, a result of it's success is that it has employed many people across the length and breadth of the UK, the company has provided first class training and developed countless people into bigger, more prosperous roles, a result of it's policy to develop from within.
