Talking Tesco: UK Competition Commission

Channel 4 Dispatches programme

26th February 2007

We provided the following statement to the programme makers:

"This programme recycles a series of myths about Tesco and paints a deeply false picture of our business. We speak to shoppers, staff and other stakeholders every day and this is not the feedback we get. Our customers are our harshest critics. They do not pull their punches, they are demanding and they punish us by shopping elsewhere if they do not like what we do."

"We aim to act ethically in every situation, living up to our guiding values that no-one tries harder for customers and that we treat people the way we like to be treated. To suggest otherwise is utterly wrong."

"Our conversations with customers also tell us that they don’t leave their morals at the door when they shop with us. Yes, they judge us on our products, on our prices and on the service they get, but they also care about how we treat their community, our suppliers and the environment. When they weigh up all of these things they make a decision on where to shop and thankfully many choose Tesco."

"We want to keep it that way which is why we will continue to listen to consult and to change our business so that it keeps on benefiting customers and the communities in which together we live and work."
