How to create a really secure password

  • The longer the better. Make it at least 8 characters long
  • Use a mix of lower and upper case letters
  • Add or swap a letter with special characters like @$*&!?
  • Steer clear of obvious words or names
  • Avoid easy to guess items like your partner’s name, your birthday or numbers like 1234

Not bought from a specific retailer before? Do a quick search to see if others have had problems. What’s their privacy policy? Does it say what they’ll do with your info? And are they using secure protocols? Check that they’ve got ‘https’ at the start of the URL on payment pages. Learn how to shop safely.

Remembering many passwords

Find it hard to keep on top of all your passwords? Create a strong core password to use across the board. Then devise a system that personalises it for different sites. For example, core password, n0Dn0L (‘London’ backwards), then add T3s (for Tesco) to make it T3sn0Dn0L.

Wi-Fi hotspots don’t encrypt information so they’re not fully secure. But don’t worry, just be sure to log out of any accounts after you use them.
