Ensure you scan every item
From bananas to bag for life, you'll need to scan every item before adding it to your trolley.
- When scanning products on promotion, such as Buy 1 Get 1 Free or Multibuys, simply scan each item to activate the promotion.
- When buying two or more of the same or similar products, scan each individual item to ensure an accurate till receipt.
Products without barcodes
- Individual Produce Individual products such as grapefruits and lemons have a barcode next to the label which can be scanned once the product has been selected.
- Produce All other produce products can be weighed on the customer scales in the produce area. After weighing the items, scan the label produced by the scales.
- Loose bakery items For every item selected, scan the barcode on the shelf edge label.
Products that won't scan
If you have trouble scanning any products, keep them separate in your trolley. When you reach the payment area at the end of your shop, one of our Customer Assistants will scan these items for you.
Sometimes the Scan as you Shop system will randomly prompt us to carry out service checks, which means we need to scan a few of your items to make sure they have all been scanned successfully. Occasionally, we may need to rescan all of your shopping but don't worry, there will always be a member of staff available to help you with this part of the service.
Security tagged items
Scan the tagged item but keep it separate in your trolley. When you reach the payment area at the end of your shop, one of our Customer Assistants will remove the security tags for you.

Terms and Conditions
These Terms and Conditions govern your use of the Tesco Scan as you Shop service and your relationship with Tesco Stores Limited (Tesco, we or us). Please read them carefully as they affect your rights and liabilities under the law. If you do not agree to these Terms and Conditions, please do not register for or use the Scan as you Shop service. Please note that to use the Scan as you Shop service you are required to register, as an authorised user, with your Clubcard and postcode details.
1. Use of the Scan as you Shop service
The Scan as you Shop service is provided to you free of charge for your personal use subject to these Terms and Conditions. By using the Scan as you Shop service you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions.
THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS DO NOT AFFECT YOUR STATUTORY RIGHTS.
We may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time. The changes will apply to the use of the Scan as you Shop service after we have given notice.
If you do not wish to accept the new Terms and Conditions you should not continue to use the Scan as you Shop service.
If you continue to use the Scan as you Shop service after the date on which the change comes into effect, your use of the service indicates your agreement to be bound by the new Terms and Conditions.
To register with Scan as you Shop you must be over 18 years of age (except for Tesco colleagues who are Privilagecard holders, who must be over sixteen years of age), have a UK postcode and hold a Tesco Clubcard, Key fob, Mobile phone app or Tesco Bank card.
4. Your information
We collect information about you when you register with and use the Scan as you Shop service.
We use your information to manage and improve the Scan as you Shop service, check and verify your identity, and prevent or detect crime. Your personal information is safe with us and will never be released to companies outside the Tesco Group for their marketing purposes.
We will never disclose your information to anyone outside the Tesco Group except where we have your consent; where we are required or permitted to do so by law; to other companies who provide a service to us; or any successors in title to our business.
Although Tesco aims to offer you the best service possible, Tesco makes no promise that the Scan as you Shop service will meet your requirements. Tesco cannot guarantee that the service will be fault free. If a fault occurs in the service you should report it to the Scan as you Shop Customer Assistant and we will attempt to correct the fault as soon as we reasonably can. Your access to the Scan as you Shop service may be occasionally restricted to allow for repairs, maintenance or the introduction of new facilities or services. Tesco will attempt to restore the service as soon as they reasonably can.
6. Difficulty scanning items
There may be instances when you have difficulty correctly scanning an item. You agree that you will notify the Scan as you Shop Customer Assistant of any such items when you come to pay for your shopping so that they can be correctly scanned and charged.
7. Service checks
We routinely carry out service checks of Tesco Scan as you Shop users. This is a part of our service and does not imply any wrongdoing on your part. You agree that your shopping may be re-scanned at any time when required by Tesco colleagues.
8. Scanning and payment
You agree to scan and pay for all items which you take into the Scan as you Shop payment area (other than those items referred to in paragraph 6 of these Terms and Conditions). By collecting a Scan as you Shop handset, you agree that the Scan as you Shop service is the method by which you will carry out all of your shopping during your visit to our store.
Should you wish to do any additional shopping without using the Scan as you Shop service, agree to pay for all your Scan as you Shop items and return the Scan as you Shop handset before returning to the store to do your additional shopping.
You can pay for your Scan as you Shop items by any method accepted in our stores at the time of purchase.
We reserve the right to refer any instance where we reasonably consider that there has been abuse of the Scan as you Shop service to the police or our Civil Debt Recovery service.
9. Prices and Promotions
Please note any deductions for promotions and coupons will register at the payment point before you pay the final bill. The total price displayed on the Scan as you Shop handset is a guide and may differ from the actual saving deducted at the Scan as you Shop payment area.
10. Tesco's Right to Suspend or Cancel your Registration
Tesco may suspend or cancel your registration immediately at our reasonable discretion or if you breach any of your obligations under these Terms and Conditions.
You can cancel this agreement at any time by informing us in writing. If you do so, you must stop using the Scan as you Shop service.
The suspension or cancellation of your registration and your right to use the Scan as you Shop service shall not affect either party's rights or liabilities.
We reserve the right to withdraw the Scan as you Shop service at any time. Paragraph 11 of these Terms and Conditions shall survive cancellation.
These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and any disputes will be decided only by the English courts.
You may not assign, sub-license or otherwise transfer any of your rights under these Terms and Conditions. If any provision of these Terms and Conditions is found to be invalid by any court having competent jurisdiction, the invalidity of that provision will not affect the validity of the remaining provisions of these Terms and Conditions, which shall remain in full force and effect.
If you breach these Terms and Conditions and Tesco ignores this, Tesco will still be entitled to use its rights and remedies at a later date or in any other situation where you breach the Terms and Conditions. Tesco shall not be responsible for any breach of these Terms and Conditions caused by circumstances beyond its control. A person who is not a party to these Terms and Conditions shall have no right under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 to enforce any term of these Terms and Conditions but this shall not affect any right or remedy of a third party which exists or is available apart from that Act.
