Tesco is constantly improving the layout of its stores in response to feedback from its customers. Developments and innovations are continuous as customer needs change.

Within the last year, at customers' request, sweets have been removed from the checkouts and baby-changing and bottle- warming facilities have been introduced into all new stores. In many cases, entrances have been opened up and improved signage installed. All these innovations have been customer-led.

Some of our store refits over the past year have been made possible by improvements to distribution and stock control systems which have reduced the need for in-store warehousing. Space which was previously used for back-up stock has now been converted into retail floor space. As a result, stores have been able to increase the size of most departments, including home entertainment and clothing areas.

Bakery and deli service counters have now been repositioned along one wall to improve access and customer service desks have been installed.

Wine experts have been working in selected stores for the past year, advising customers on which wine to buy to complement their meal. The scheme has proved extremely popular and will be extended next year.
