What is high blood pressure?
One in three adults suffers from high blood pressure which, if untreated, can increase your risk of a stroke or heart attack. Blood pressure is the force at which blood travels through the arteries when it is pumped by the heart. It is measured as systolic (the maximum pressure exerted when the heart contracts) over diastolic (the pressure when it is at rest). High blood pressure is a systolic reading above 140mmHg or diastolic above 90.
Possible causes of high blood pressure
- Hereditary factors
- Unhealthy diet
- Heavy drinking
- Smoking
- Lack of exercise
- Stress

What are the symptoms?
High blood pressure rarely has any symptoms. The only way to know whether you have high blood pressure is to have it measured.
How can I check my blood pressure?
Ask at the Tesco Pharmacy about our free blood pressure check, which is a confidental service undertaken by a specially trained member of the Pharmacy team in the private consultation area. You can also ask for a demonstration of a monitor to show you how you can check your blood pressure at home.
Benefits of home monitoring
- You may be able to take steps to reduce your blood pressure before any problems arise.
- You will have a consistently accurate reading of your blood pressure which you can show your doctor.
- You will also be able to notice if your blood pressure becomes too high and make an appointment to see your doctor or nurse.
- You will feel more in control, and confident that lifestyle changes and, where relevant, medication are working.
Three easy steps
1. Ask at the Pharmacy if you are interested in making an appointment – you may be able to have one straight away.
2. Download and fill in the Blood pressure check form and bring it with you to your appointment.
3. Your results will be explained to you and you’ll be given advice on how to reduce or
maintain your blood pressure levels. If the reading is high it will be re-checked and, if appropriate, you may be referred to your doctor.
