Waist to Hip Ratio

Research shows that people with "apple-shaped" bodies (with more weight around the waist) face more health risks than those with "pear-shaped" bodies that carry more weight around the hips.

Waist to Hip Ratio:

Instructions

  1. Standing relaxed, measure your waist where it is smallest (at your navel) and enter this number in the "Waist" box.
  2. Measure your hips where they are the largest (over your buttocks) and enter this number in the "Hip" box.
NOTE: Do not pull tightly on the measuring tape in either instance.
  3. Click the "Calculate" Button.
  4. Your waist-hip ratio will appear below.

Interpreting the data

Ratios above 0.80 for women and 0.95 for men are associated with obesity and are linked to greater risk for health complications and diseases.
