Melon de Bourgogne
The grape variety used to produce Muscadet, Melon de Bourgogne, is relatively neutral. Winemaking techniques are complex to give the wine more flavor and complexity. Muscadet is usually bottled in the spring or fall following the harvest but can also be a young wine (like the Beaujolais nouveau ) and sold from the third Thursday of November.
The tradition of viticulture in the Nantes region of Muscadet, started from the Roman emperor Probus whose soldiers planted the first vines in the territory. Viticulture developed there during the Middle Ages under the impetus of the monks of the abbeys of Country Nantes.
Originally cultivated by Romans, these vineyards have long been celebrated for producing high quality wine. The grapes are grown in Nantais, where the clay soils are rich in minerals.
