Recycle and see your CO2 savings

Our automated recycling centres help you recycle and lower your carbon footprint. But how much CO2 are you actually saving? Thanks to new innovative technology, we can now let you know the amount of CO2 you save each time you recycle.

Tesco automated recycling centres

Our automated recycling machines will help you easily recycle your cans, glass and plastic bottles.

These state-of-the-art recycling machines not only make recycling simple, they're also easy to use:

  1. Insert. Drop recyclable items one at a time into the ‘intelligent’ machine.
  2. Scan. The items are scanned by a laser reader. To help reduce contamination, the machine will reject some items.
  3. Transfer. Buckets carry accepted items to a conveyor system that deposits it in specific bins.
  4. Squash. The item is smashed, crushed and granulated. This means it takes up less room, meaning fewer collections and fewer lorries on the roads, thus reducing CO2 emissions.

Green Clubcard points

You’ll receive one green Clubcard point for every two aluminium cans you recycle.

What can I recycle at the Tesco automated recycling centre?

The machines can recycle:

  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Steel and aluminium food and drink cans
  • Plastic bottles (eg milk containers and soft drink/water bottles)

You can’t use the automatic recyclers to recycle:

  • Plastic food trays (unless you’re in Scotland)
  • Clingfilm
  • Yoghurt pots (unless you’re in Scotland)
  • Bubble wrap
  • Window panes
  • Light bulbs
  • Glass ovenware
  • Electrical equipment
  • Aerosol cans
  • Juice cartons

As part of a trial, Tesco recycling centres at Scottish stores will take plastic food trays and yogurt pots for recycling – ones in England don’t currently accept these.
