Recycle Now Week

21-27 June 2010

Did you know each of us accumulates three new electrical items each year on average – that's 173 million nationally? But we find it much harder to let them go, as only one in five gets recycled.

This year's Recycle Week is all about recycling small electrical items, which means anything with a battery or plug. So gather together those broken toasters and kettles and get recycling (or reusing).

Recycling your electrical equipment

There are now easy ways to recycle your old electrical equipment.

Government figures show that UK households dispose of more than 1.2 million tonnes of electrical products every year – equivalent to 150,000 double decker buses, enough to fill the new Wembley stadium six times over!

Why recycle electrical equipment

Recycling electrical equipment, instead of throwing it out, avoids hazardous substances going into landfill and conserves natural resources by recycling old equipment into new uses.

To remind you to recycle, new electrical products are marked with the crossed out wheelie bin symbol.

How to recycle

It can be confusing to know which small electricals can be recycled, but it’s easy when you know:

  • If it has a mains cable or uses replaceable batteries or needs charging, then you can recycle it. Look out for the crossed-out wheelie bin logo on it too.
  • For old or broken small electricals sitting unused in your house, the best thing is to take it to your local recycling centre: visit www.recyclenow.com to find your nearest drop off point.
  • Look out for events organised by your local authority, and visit the Recycle Now website for all the latest information.

Tesco has joined together with other leading UK electrical retailers to provide funding to help local councils to provide these facilities.

Find your nearest electrical recycling facility at www.recyclenow.com or by calling Tesco Customer Services Helpline on 0800 50 55 55.
