A new run must mean it's time to lay eggs...

Did you know?

A chicken will lay bigger and stronger eggs if you change the lighting in such a way as to make them think a day is 28 hours long!

Week 4: Eggs and extensions!

As building work begins at the Pearson’s, the family extends the coop, relocates the chickens and waits, hopefully, for eggs…

As I mentioned last time, the chickens have been showing definite signs of becoming ready to lay: making nests out of paper and sitting on the ground looking broody.

We’ve also moved the coop to the bottom of the garden because of the building work, which was easier said than done! We had a couple of escapees… but after some frantic chasing, they have settled into their relocated hen house.

Free to roam

Matt and Geoff have built a permanent extension to the coop, to allow the chickens more room to roam.

The chicken wire was delivered, the frame built and assembled and the chickens were let out into their new run. They clucked and pecked and flapped and squawked in what can only be described as chicken delight!

Each of the hens has a favourite perch, with Poppet’s obviously being just a little bit higher than everyone else’s!

Eggs galore

A couple of days later, we were awoken to the dulcet tones of both Lily and Ruby racing around the garden shouting ‘Eggs! Eggs!’ Matt and I raced down stairs and sure enough, on the straw in the laying compartment were four freshly laid eggs.

Their relocation to the new improved coop had clearly done the trick.

So now we’re the lucky recipients of the most deliciously tasty freshly laid eggs everyday. I just need a kitchen to cook them in now!
