Mealworms on a bed of spaghetti… Doesn’t sound too appetising, but as the Pearsons find out, it’s the chickens’ favourite dish of the day!
Ruby here! Mum asked me to find out what our chickens like to eat – to thank them for all the eggs they have laid.
It turns out chickens like bananas, spaghetti, plums and tomatoes. But what they love best is mealworms! The nice man in the pet shop suggested we give them a try, not us, the chickens – and they loved them.
Back to mum…
Thanks, Ruby.
As ever, I have been preoccupied with the ongoing build. So when we went to scoop some food for the birds the other day, to my horror, I found that there was none left. Disaster!
The man in the pet shop suggested mealworms and wild bird food, but unfortunately our hens weren’t keen on the pumpkin seeds, as they couldn’t remove the husks.
Then I remembered James, from Omlet, had left us some feed when the chickens were delivered. I also remembered that their offices weren’t too far away – the neighbouring village to be precise – so we headed to Omlet HQ to pick up some feed. While we were there, we also got to see the day-to-day workings of the company – thanks for showing us around!
I wanted to find out more about Omlet and in the process discovered that they run hen-keeping courses. I’ve booked the girls and I on the next one, which is happening soon.
The course is ideal for ‘complete novices’. Which we are! It provides all the information that you need to keep chickens with confidence: day-to-day maintenance, feeding, health checks and how to handle your chickens.
It probably tells you to check that you’ve got enough food too! I’ll let you know how we get on!
